Choosing and Using Child Restraints

updated 03-24-11

New AAP Guidelines
On Monday, March 21, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released updated child passenger safety guidelines. At the same time, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released their updated child seat guidelines. The AAP and NHTSA revised guidelines are consistent with each other.

The NC Child Passenger Safety Law has not changed.

For information on the updated AAP Guidelines, refer to:

For information on the updated NHTSA Guidelines, refer to:
Child Safety: Which car seat is the right for your child?

Properly used child restraints and seat belts provide very good protection to children. Providing this protection to children in crashes requires three important steps:

  • The restraint used must be the right type for the size and age of the child,
  • The child must be buckled correctly into the restraint according to the manufacturer's instructions, and
  • The restraint must be correctly installed in the vehicle according to the child restraint and vehicle manufacturers' instructions.
