Approval of Technicians as Technician

- A. Nationally Certified Technicians who wish to pursue their certification as a Nationally Certified Technician Instructor through NC-sponsored training classes shall adhere to the following guidelines. The Technician seeking Instructor Candidacy:
- Must be certified as a Child Passenger Safety Technician for at least one year prior to making application to the NC CPS Training Committee. NOTE: Technicians who recertify through the NHTSA Renewal Course must be certified for at least one year before making application for instructor candidacy or mentored technician.
- Must have attended the latest CPS Update/Refresher course available.
- Must be an active instructor for the NC CPS Basic Training Program having taught at least three classes.
- Must receive satisfactory evaluations by three different certified CPS Technician Instructors.
- Must complete the process to be approved to sit as a National CPS Technician - Instructor Candidate. Refer to the Safe Kids Worldwide Certification website, accessed through www.cpsboard.org or www.safekids.org for more information about becoming an Instructor Candidate. [Note: Allow a minimum of three months to complete this process.]
- 6) Technicians should use the NC Technician Instructor Candidate Application form (available from the NC CPSRC [800-672-4527] or by download from buckleupnc.org) to provide the following documentation to the NC CPS Training Committee:
- Date, location, and name of your lead instructor for technician certification course,
- Dates, locations, and instructor name for all update sessions attended,
- Dates, locations, assisting instructors, and number of students of all NC CPS Basic Training Courses taught,
- Copies of the Instructor Candidate application and required documentation submitted to Safe Kids/ CPS Certification.
- Documentation of any continuing education and prior activity in the area of Child Passenger Safety. This may include any conferences attended, education of parents/caregivers, estimated number of inspections performed, number of checkup events attended, and any other relevant information for the Committee to consider.
- Instructor Candidates who wish to pursue certification as a Nationally Certified Technician Instructor through NC-sponsored training classes must agree to complete their candidacy in a class located outside of their home community. Candidates will be assigned to a class where there will be no personal or professional ties to other instructors or participants.
- Questions or inquiries concerning eligibility or the approval process may be submitted to the NC CPS Resource Center.
- Instructor Candidates will also complete all steps in order to be placed in the state's list of vendors to receive reimbursement. This process should take place after you have been approved to sit as an instructor-candidate, and prior to being scheduled for your instructor-candidate class. Information on completing this process can be obtained from the NC DOI Office of the State Fire Marshal.
- An instructor whose certification has expired, must recertify as a technician according to Safe Kids certification policy. To recertify as an instructor, the entire instructor candidacy process must be completed. In addition, North Carolina requires that a candidate teach a minimum of three NC CPS Basic Awareness classes before completing candidacy in a NHTSA CPS Technician Certification Course. However, the one year waiting period for eligibility to teach the NC CPS Basic Course may be waived.
