Basic CPS Educational Class

updated 02-01-10

The goal of Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Basic Training course is to create an awareness of the importance of child passenger safety education in preventing deaths and injuries to children in car crashes. The focus of this program is primarily on child restraints, but seat belt use for children and adults is discussed as well. Participation in a Basic Awareness class does not result in any type of certification.

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Understand and explain state law vs. best practice
  • Educate others on child passenger safety issues
  • Detect child passenger safety violations
  • Identify resources
  • Be able to say, "I don't know" when necessary
  • Provide basic instruction to parents on correct child restraint use
  • Assist at a child safety seat checkup clinic

Participants will NOT be able to:

  • Serve as a Senior Checker at a Child Passenger Safety event
  • Set up and coordinate a child passenger safety clinic without guidance of a Certified Technician
  • Serve as a technical expert for the media
  • Operate child restraint distribution program

Refer to the NC CPS Training Class Schedule page for a schedule of Basic Awareness classes and registration information.
